MEDITATION CENTER
02.2024
Location: Honolulu, Hawai’i
Time period: 1 month
Area: 5,350 SQFT

Honored to design a meditation center for a Vietnamese
Buddhist community in Honolulu, creating a space for
spiritual reflection and cultural learning. The design
envisions a harmonious connection between the Buddha
area and the natural surroundings, inspired by Vietnamese
vernacular traditions. The interior garden is central to the
design, symbolizing humanity’s unity with nature and the
importance of coexistence among all living beings. The
minimalist structure emphasizes simplicity and devotion,
reflecting the center’s spiritual purpose.
To enhance the visitor experience, a multi-level approach:
practical facilities like parking, classrooms, housing, and
an outdoor kitchen are placed at ground level. Visitors
ascend through a linear hall designed to evoke a serene,
reflective journey, culminating at the elevated Buddha
area. This thoughtful progression mirrors the teachings of
mindfulness and spiritual elevation.
To address fundraising, legal, and zoning challenges,
the project will unfold in two phases. Phase 1 focuses on
constructing a temporary pavilion to expand the existing
backyard space, supporting the center’s immediate
needs. Phase 2 will realize the final design, ensuring a
seamless evolution of the center as regulatory matters are
resolved. This phased approach allows the center to grow
organically, maintaining its connection to the community
while embracing its long-term vision.
